The history of this unspoiled area is as hazy as its blue peaks at nightfall, especially the origin of the “fort” in Fort Mountain. Fort Mountain was named for an 855-foot stone wall that runs east to west and stands just under the peak of Fort Mountain in North Georgia. The mysterious wall stands two feet in some places and as high as six feet in others; many agree that the wall was probably significantly higher when it was originally built. For countless years people from far and wide have tried to figure out just who, when, and why the wall was built. The mystery surrounding Fort Mountain is unsolved and shall remain that way for years to come but there are interesting theories that have the curious wanting to see it for themselves.

MOONEYES

Some believe that the wall was built to protect Welsh explorers from hostile Indians. Cherokee Indian legend refers to a race that they called “moon eyes”. The term “moon eyes” has been thought to refer to light skinned, light eye colored people. Legend says that they inhabited a portion of the North Georgia Mountains.

SUNLIGHT

More widely believed is that a tribe of Indians may have built the wall for religious reasons. The sun (and all things nature) was a religious symbol for many Indian cultures and the wall is built in a way that the sun is directly on one side of the wall at sunrise and the opposite side at sunset. No religious artifacts have ever been reported found at the site of the wall, supporting this theory, as Indians tended to take their ceremonial pieces with them when they moved on.

While the mystery remains as to who built the wall and why, scholars can agree that the wall is old.The most agreed upon date of construction is sometime around 500 A.D. making this stone wall over 1500 years old! Today’s residents and visitors regularly uncover arrowheads, making their visit even more exciting.

Can you solve the mystery of Fort Mountain in the North Georgia Mountains or will the mystery remain around for another 1500 years?

Travelling isn’t always fun. Sometimes it can be downright grueling. Here are a couple of suggestions for accessories that can numb the pain of travel.

1.	Neck Pillow
Nothing is more valuable to your mental health than a few good hours of sleep. If you’ve ever taken a redeye flight before, you know that if you can’t fall asleep for at least part of, the next day is going to be pretty miserable. So be good to your body and pack a small travel pillow in your carry-on baggage.

2.	Slip-on Shoes
We should be used to the fact that airport security more often than not requires us to remove our shoes to go through security, and yet people still insist upon wearing lace up shoes or boots with straps and buttons all up and down them when travelling. To get through security in the blink of the eye, wear a pair of slip on shoes for the trip. And make them a comfortable pair while you’re at it.

3.	Manicure Set
Especially if you are travelling for business, it’s important to remain looking presentable at all times, which can be difficult without the appropriate tools. Get a compact men’s manicure set that you can toss in any bag and rest assured that your nails at least will always look good. Just remember however, that if travelling by plane, you will probably not be allowed to pack these items in your carry-on baggage.

4.	Dopp Kit/Cosmetic Case
Keeping all of your cosmetics together is essential. Invest in a quality carrying case for all of your cosmetic items and you will never again have to dig through every last item in your bag in search of a tube of toothpaste.

Duffle bags are a little different that your traditional carry on luggage because you’re goign to find that you can throw a duffle bag over your shoulder, while with a carry on luggage, you’re going to have to drag it anywhere you go. If you don’t want to drag it anymore, you’re going to simply have to pick it up and lug it around, making it worse.

What makes a duffle bag better than a carry on bag?

For starters, you can’t wheel around your bag everywhere you go. You may find it easier to lug around the bag on your shoulder, rather than wheel it through a crowd, or even on an airplane. I have found that with a carry on bag, I can’t really carry it around, since it starts to hurt my arms after a while.

The cool things about the duffle bags today is that you can get ones on wheels. You can then take those wheels and push them into the bag, essentially hiding them. This is a great way to make your bag look like a traditional duffle bag. Whether you want to take these bags to your baseball games filled with bats and balls, or you find it easier to carry around your clothes. I have found that they have come a long way!

Many of the bags today have compartments, as well as a lot of zippered storage on the outside. This is going to make it great for those that need to organize a lot of items. Personally, I really only divide my clothes from my toiltery items, but many others are different. Many have found that they love to organize their clothes by the day and night, as well as put make up in one, while toothpaste and brushes in the other. I think you get the clue here!

When you’re ready to check out a duffle bag, I recommend a few companies online that you should look into. Many of them are different in many ways. From the fabric to the space, be sure to check out at least 3-5 of them.

Here are some brands to look at…

Timberland

High Sierra

Samsonite

Olympia

Skiing is one of the most favorite sport in wintertime in states of New York; the credit goes to Catskill Mountains. From New York States Catskill Mountains are only at a distance of two hours. Therefore all the skiers of New York States go to the Catskill Mountains for skiing. As the winter season begins on the Catskill Mountains, all the ski resorts in Catskills become occupied by the skiers. The skiers start their migration and so forth the region gets occupied by the skiers from everyplace of the country.

Although the commonest activity of skiers at the Catskill Mountains is the downhill skiing, there are several additional exterior possibilities which are worthy to try. Few of the ski resorts in Catskills, like Bellaire Mountain proffer off-road skiing, but the area to steer for unforgettable views and a passive ambience is Mountain Trails off-road Ski Center in Tannersville. It has thirty miles of impeccably curried tracks which alter in difficulty; you are able to relish a good afternoon of gliding by pine-scented woods.

As well you are able to relish an idle afternoon in the captivating small village of New Paltz. There are few fabulous quaint eateries, antiquing and a richness of antique architecture visible in this region. The Mohonk Mountain House adjacent to this place has been recognized as an impressive inn. Here you are able to relish the lakes, eternal cliffs and miles of hiking paths in addition to skiing in the Catskill Mountains. Those people who are tired of skiing can as well relish an array of additional activities such as having a stroll by the elegant river and falls here. If you’re looking for a broad option of runs in ski resorts in Catskills, then Hunter Mountain is surely the best place for you. Whether it is your first chance or a continual winter expedition, visitors of any ages will relish the fifty plus tracks which may hold from novices to experts.

One may look for a soothing experience in the art and culture here in addition to the inviting village or merely shop at the boutiques and elegant lodgings here. The region has been a host of regular musical performances and art displays held over the weekends. As skiing in the Catskill Mountains is not potential in summertime, you may have trails and long walks. The Hudson River School Art Trail is a nationwide denominated refreshment trail and renders you with an unusual feel of playfulness and dining. The feel of skiing in the Catskill Mountains isn’t the sole element which appeals tourists to this region and you may have fun here during the summertime also.

The Catskill Mountains have been the ideal place for the urban people for over ten decades. Whatever be your favorite, ski resorts in Catskills is definitely a lifetime experience.

Perfect climate and perfect terrain make New Zealand a natural for all skiiers and snowboarders.

Ski New Zealand

Are you looking for the perfect Ski New Zealand holiday? Great snow, amazing scenery, and conditions to suit your level of experience?

Well New Zealand is the place, and right now is the time to start planning. A favourable exchange rate (click here to view our Currency Calculator), cheap flights, and value for money ski and snowboarding packages combine to make New Zealand one of the world’s premier ski and snowboarding destinations.

But firstly, a little bit of information about New Zealand skifields…….

Wow! What a Setting

Come on, Ski New Zealand! See what all the talk is about.

Over millions of years, Mother Nature created the perfect setting for New Zealand’s skifields. In the South Island, the Southern Alps run for over 500 kilometres through the centre of the island. With numerous peaks towering over 3,000 metres in height, the Southern Alps are dotted with several world class fields.

And in New Zealand’s North Island, Mt Ruapehu, which is the tallest of several volcanoes, towers to almost 2,800 metres above sea level.

When Are New Zealand Ski Fields Open?

Most fields open in mid to late June and the season runs to late September or early October, depending on conditions. This four month window allows you plenty of time to enjoy the best of New Zealand’s wonderful conditions

Facilities are regularly upgraded, and conditions range from “easy” for beginners, to “extreme” for experienced skiiers and snowboarders. Many fields have dedicated areas for learners, whilst those longing to really test themselves can take advantage of several remote areas able to be accessed only by helicopter.

And don’t forget that New Zealand’s resort towns offer a wonderful range of facilities to keep you occupied at day’s end. Bars, restaurants, and shops are all keen to offer quality service and products, and are really focussed on providing you with an experience to remember during your ski New Zealand adventure.

New Zealand’s North Island has several ski resorts, but the majority are located on the South Island. Both islands have a range of commercial fields and smaller club fields, giving value for money to club members.

Skifields are located at:

North Island

Mount Ruapehu

Whakapapa, Tukino (club skifield), Turoa

Taranaki

Manganui (club skifield)

South Island

Nelson Lakes

Rainbow, Mount Robert

Canterbury

Fox Peak (club skifield), Hanmer Springs Ski Area (club skifield), Mount Lyford, Mount Potts (heliskiing and snowcatting only), Mount Hutt, Mount Dobson, Ohau, Porter Heights, Tasman Glacier (Heliski), Temple Basin (club skifield), Broken River (club skifield), Craigieburn Valley (club skifield), Mount Cheeseman (club skifield), Mount Olympus (club skifield),

Otago

Coronet Peak, Invincible Snowfields (helicopter access only), The Remarkables, Round Hill, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Treble Cone, Snow Park, Snow Farm (cross-country skiing only),

North Island

Mount Ruapehu

Mt Ruapehu, located in the central North Island, is said to house New Zealand’s largest and highest fields. Here you can ski a volcano on two ski areas, Whakapapa and Turoa. Here the season runs from mid June to mid October.

Whakapapa is proud of it’s reputation for having the best beginners’ facilities, including a dedicated slow-moving chairlift, a ski school, rental area and cafe. Experienced skiers rave about the variety of intermediate and advanced runs and the two thrilling lift accessed back country fields.

Turoa has a wide choice of groomed trails, the country’s only lift-accessed glacial skiing, three terrain parks, and a 4 km long run. Also on offer are on mountain childcare facilities and a great area for beginners.

South Island

Christchurch and Canterbury

The lovely garden city of Christchurch is located on the central east coast of New Zealand’s South Island. It’s the perfect place to start your ski New Zealand holiday, with easy access to the the various Canterbury fields. With a distinctly English feel, Christchurch is a thriving city with plenty to see and do.

South of Christchurch, the Canterbury Plains lead you to the resort town of Methven. Further south are the bubbling, thriving resorts of Queenstown and Wanaka, both offering world class fields, and absolutely stunning scenery.

Methven

About 1 hours drive from Christchurch, is Methven. Snow covered alps and beautiful valleys surround Methven, your stop off point for Mount Hutt. A wonderful range of facilities make Methven the perfect base for your South Island ski adventure.

Mt Hutt boasts 472 skiable hectares. A wide variety of terrain, deep snow, and long seasons make it an excellent choice for both families and serious skiers and snowboarders. The recent completion of a Mini Terrain Park allows an easy transition from novice to intermediate rider.

Queenstown

Queenstown is one of those rare places that will take your breath away. Towering peaks, a stunning lake, and a thriving community make Queenstown the perfect base for your ski New Zealand holiday. Often referred to as the “Adventure Capital” of New Zealand, Queenstown is a non stop destination with a huge range of bars, restaurants, shops, activities and accommodation to suit all tastes. And the nearby Remarkables and Coronet Peak fields allow some of the best ski and snowboarding conditions available in New Zealand.

The Remarkables offer skiers three large sunny areas and amazing vistas of the Southern Alps. A North facing aspect and great conditions make the Remarkables one of the best places to learn in the Southern Hemisphere. A creche and children’s centre caters for kids from 3 months to 17 years, making the Remarkables a superb choice for families.
Getting your children kitted out for family ski holidays can be an expensive process, as they grow so quickly that you might only get one season’s worth for each set of gear. Although it’s tempting to buy the next size up so they can ‘grow into it’, this can make skiing difficult which, in turn, makes it less enjoyable and can put your children off the sport completely.

Most ski clothing and equipment can be hired, which is a good option if it’s your first family ski holiday or you ski infrequently. However it’s useful to buy some ski gear such as underwear, balaclavas, and ski gloves as these can be used for general winter use. It’s best to buy these things before your trip to avoid unnecessary time in ski shops when you could be hitting the slopes. If you’re fortunate enough to be staying in a luxury catered chalet, the company may arrange for a selection of ski equipment to be brought to your chalet so that you can make your choices in comfortable and relaxed surroundings. Beats standing in a long queue waiting to speak to a sales assistant!

Layering and waterproofing is the key to keeping your children warm and dry, and ensures that everyone stays happy on the slopes. Whether you are buying new or second-hand, apply waterproofing spray to all outer garments and gloves: you won’t regret it.

The range of ski and snowboarding clothing for kids has exploded in recent years, with brands such as Billabong, Bonfire, O’Neill and Quiksilver offering funky bright designs. Most jackets have been designed so they can be worn back home on the street, so you should get lots of wear out of them. In skiwear, all-in-one suits are good for younger ones as they tend to be warmer than separates.

Make sure your children wear a properly fitted ski helmet, and set a good example by wearing one yourself. New technology means that helmets are lightweight, comfortable and ventilated and your ski shop should have a good selection either to hire or buy. There’s really no excuse not to wear one!

Protect your children’s eyes by ensuring they have goggles that fit well, offer both UVA and UVB protection, and have vermilion or citrus-orange lenses for higher definition of shapes and bumps in the snow. It’s easy to forget how much glare there is from reflection of the sun’s rays off the snow.

As mentioned earlier, many luxury ski chalet companies will discuss your requirements well in advance of your trip and organise for suitable equipment to be brought to you on the evening of your arrival, along with ski passes. Look out for these conveniences when planning your next family skiing holiday.

Look out for my feature on choosing childrens’ skis and ski boots, coming soon.

Preparing for a ski vacation is simple once you use a checklist. Remember the elements when preparing for your ski trip. Start your list from the inside out. Thermal underwear is pretty vital, especially if the ski vacation is in the dead of winter. Next make sure to remember woolen thermal socks another essential that will be welcome on those lengthy chair lift rides. Next is a warm knit or down hat with ear muffs.

You should think this appears silly but trust me you must like it when the weather turn for the worse. A comfortable sweater or hoodie is the next good, a hoodie is better because you would use the hood over the hat.

Ski pants could be the most underrated item to take on a ski vacation. Have a pair that is water resistant but they must not appear like diapers. The greatest ski boots have a neoprene interior, if renting boots ask for neoprene. Ski size is also key, make sure the skis tips come to the top of your head no further. Poles should be hip length and no taller. Now that you are decked out and ready for the slopes make sure the vehicle you are driving is ready for the ski vacation. Make sure you have snow chains ready and know how to use them. Also make sure the automobile you are driving has proper anti freeze and is in good repair. It is never a good ski outing when you break down on the way there or back.

North Lake Tahoe offers some of the best skiing in the world. However, the task of choosing a ski resort can be kind of daunting when there are so many good ones. Here’s some recommendations:

1. Squaw Valley: Probably has the best terrain in the Tahoe Basin. Amazing facilities (being that it hosted the olympics in 1960). If you like steep terrain, this resort is for you. As for cons, it can be a bit pricey if you don’t have a season pass. Typical day rates are in the upper $80s.

2. Alpine Meadows: The terrain is similar to Squaw Valley. Amazing views of the surrounding mountains. And the best part of Alpine is it has more of a local vibe and it is cheaper than many of the other resorts around Lake Tahoe. Often, you can find good deals for Alpine. Keep your eyes open in the supermarkets and ski shops.

3. Northstar at Tahoe: This resort is more of a family resort. If you’re into the really steep and deep skiing, Northstar probably isn’t for you. But if you want to have a great time with the family, Northstar has a quant village and lots of fun runs for any ability level.

4. Sugarbowl: This is one of the first ski resorts in the Tahoe Basin. It’s definitely a classic. Good terrain for any ability, reasonable prices, good views, its got it all.

5. Homewood: A small ski resort on the west shore. Doesn’t have much expert terrain or variety but it does blow out the other ski resorts in one category: the view. Homewood has the best views of the lake out of any Tahoe ski resort.

These are just some of my favorites. There are many more around the Tahoe area, but I would encourage you to check out one of these. Have fun out there!

Ocean Freight Quote – If you move large volumes of cargo to or from the USA, STAT Logistics’ ocean services are the answer. With many differences in service, transit times and cost, it is critical to work with an organization that offers a wide array of options that meet both your service requirements and your transportation budget.
